What do you get when you combine African folk music, contemporary Jazz, and a violin? The answer: Regina Carter’s Reverse Thread (E1 Entertainment). Just like this Detroit native’s other projects, her latest 12-track CD does not disappoint. Each track has an interesting theme to it. “Day Dreaming On The Niger” will have you daydreaming about being in Western Africa. On the other hand, “Artistiya” will have you dancing to festive West African beats. (Don’t listen to either track during work hours if you plan on being productive). To complement the sound of her violin, Carter added the sounds of an accordion and kora. The latter is a West African harp traditionally played by village storytellers. Carter is currently on tour, so definitely catch her if you can. Click here for tour cites and dates.
Verdict: 4.5 out of 5 clefs. If you are looking for an African twist to contemporary jazz, this CD is for you.
